Rhyssoplax aerea aerea is a subspecies of chiton in the family Chitonidae, endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It is found under rocks at and below low tide in coastal situations.
The shell has elaborate sculpture. The head valve has 13 to 19 smooth to slightly nodulose radial ribs, often with intermediates that do not reach the apex.
Coloration is variable, ranging from deep-green to brick-red, often with a wedge-shaped darker marking at the crest of each valve, vertical streaks at the sides, and a few pale rectangular patches on the girdle.
Length is up to 39 mm, and width 22 mm.
