Massacre

On December 13, 1991, the Armenian military units and the 366th motorized rifle regiment under the United Armed Forces of the Commonwealth of Independent States besieged Jamilli village of the Khojaly region of Azerbaijan.[2] On December 14-15 they attacked the village.[3] First of all, the village was hit by artillery fire.[4] Jamilli was protected by the local self-defense unit and the police unit from Agjabadi district. After several hours of mass shooting, they took control of the village. The armed men who entered the village first set fire to 14 houses and then started looting.[5] At that time, 9 Azerbaijani civilians were killed. According to Tehran Ibadov, a witness of the massacre, the Armenians robbed and mocked the corpses. List of victims of the massacre:

  • Khidir Jabbarov
  • Vagif Javadov
  • Ahmad Javadov
  • Fikrat Mehdiyev
  • Vagif Sadigov
  • Speaker Salahov
  • Shakir Salahov
  • Mammad Zeynalov
  • Bahram Ismayilov

During the massacre, Jamilli village was completely burned.[6] The rest of Jamili's population was forcibly displaced.[7]"Memorial" human rights organization published information about the forced relocation of the Azerbaijani residents of Jamilli, as well as the population of several villages in the area, during the First Karabakh War.[8] Ganahat Hajiyev, one of the witnesses of the Khojaly genocide, said that the residents of Jamilli "did not want to leave" the village because they did not believe that the Armenians "could kill so many people", they believed that the government forces would help them.[1]

Azerbaijani journalist Gulu Muharramli called the Jamili tragedy along with other massacres "a tragic page in the history of the 20th century".[9]
