He was born Prince ''Ludwig August Maria Eudes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Duke in Saxony'', he was the second son of [[August of Saxe-Coburg-Kohary]] ([[Kohary|Fürst (Prince) Kohary de Csábrág et Szitnya]] from [[1851]]) and [[Clémentine of Orléans]].

Ludwig August and his first cousin, the French Prince [[Gaston, comte d'Eu]] (son of Viktoria, sister of August's father) were imported to [[Brazil]] in order to marry with the two only surviving daughters of the Emperor [[Pedro II of Brazil]]: [[Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil|Isabel]], the oldest, and [[Leopoldina of Brazil|Leopoldina]], the youngest. The original plan was August marry to Isabel and Gaston to Leopoldina, but the girls decided otherwise and the Emperor, having himself experienced unhappinesses of an arranged dynastic marriage, agreed to their wishes.

Ludwig August and Leopoldina married in [[Rio de Janeiro]] on [[15 December]] [[1864]], two months after the wedding of Isabel and Gaston. They had four sons:

Ludwig August Maria Eudes of Saxe-Coburg-Kohary (b. Château d'Eu, 8 August 1845 - d. Karlsbad, 14 September 1907), was a german prince of the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

He was born Prince Ludwig August Maria Eudes of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Duke in Saxony, he was the second son of August of Saxe-Coburg-Kohary (Fürst (Prince) Kohary de Csábrág et Szitnya from 1851) and Clémentine of Orléans.

  4. Ludwig Gaston Klemens Maria (b. Ebenthal, 15 September 1870 - d. Innsbruck, 23 January 1942).
