Elisabeth Anne Wheeler (1943-)[1] is an American biologist, botanist, and wood scientist, who is an emeritus professor at the North Carolina State University having yearlong research work in the area of wood anatomy (softwoods and hardwoods).[2][3][4]

First years and studies

Wheeler studied biology in the Reed College at Portland, Oregon and got her BSc in 1965. She carried her MSc studies in botany at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (1968-1970), and she continued with doctorate research in botany obtaining her PhD in 1972.[5]

Research career

During the years 1972-1976 she worked as a curatorial assistant and honorary research fellow at the Bailey-Wetmore Laboratory of Plant Anatomy and Morphology in the Harvard University. In 1976, Wheeler became assistant professor at the North Carolina State University in the Department of Wood and Paper Science, where she worked continually until 2008.

Wheeler has coordinated the NCSA initiative for the creation of the InsideWood, a unique database[6][7][8] containing thousands of microtomical features and 36,000 photo characteristics of the global wood species.[9]

She is a distiguished member of the International Association of Wood Anatomists, the Botanical Society of America, and the International Organization of Paleobotany. She also serves as a co-editor of the IAWA Journal and member of its award committee.[10]

Up to November 2023, Wheeler's research work has been cited for more than 7,000 times in Google Scholar (h-index: 46).[11]
