The women's handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina under the management of the Handball Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[1]

After secession from the SFRY, the Handball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent and in 1992 became a member of the European (EHF) and World (IHF) handball federations and founded the first national handball team.[2]

History

After 13 years of absence, the women's senior handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered in Lukavac 15 March 2021.[3] Radan Rovčanin was chosen as the coach, and BiH handball players used the time ahead to prepare for the upcoming the qualifications for EURO 2022.

In the period of 13 years of hiatus,[4] a lot happened and many generations of quality handball players were lost. For all these years there were some small improvisations, attempts and gatherings, but the Handball Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina never managed to create continuity and systematic work, which is necessary for a national team. The Handball Association had a lot of problems, that Bosnian national league were below the level they can be at, lack of confidence and a built-in system that would lead the women national team some results.[5]

2022 European Women's Handball Championship qualification

Women's handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina got to know their rivals in the first round of qualification for the 2022 European Championship. Radan Rovačnin's chosen team got Greece, Italy and Latvia as their opponents, and the selector gave a short comment about the group to SportSport.ba.[6]

These are all the national teams that play the qualifiers continuously. We are going without pressure, we will do our best to present BiH at its best. This is the beginning of creating a national team. We are not without chances, we will also see what the system around will be like. The girls are training hard We're going step by step," Rovčanin pointed out.[7]

Only the group winners advance to the second stage of the qualifiers, which begun in October 2021. Matches were played from May 31 to June 6.[8]

24.05.21 Radan Rovčanin, announced the list of 18 players who will defend the colors of Bosnia at the qualifying tournament in Greece. The tournament was played from June 4 to 6, and the opponents was Greece, Italy and Latvia.[9]

The list included:

Greece- Bosnia

In the first match the Greek women's handball team celebrated with a well-deserved score of 29:18.[11]

From the very beginning of the match, Greece had a score advantage, but Bosnian handball players coped well with the favored Greek women until about five minutes before the break. The very end of the first part was entered with a score of 10:10, but then in just a few minutes the Greeks made a 5:0 run and went to the break with a big advantage (15:10).[12]

In the second half, the home team held the strings of the game in their hands, and as the end approached, so did their advantage. Eight minutes before the end, the scoreboard read 27:17. Nothing new until the end, that is, the Greeks keep a convincing advantage with a safe game. The final score was 29:18. The most effective for Greece were Maria Chatziparasidou and Vailiki Gkatziou with six goals each, while for bosnian selection Armina Isić with five and Marija Gudelj with four goals were the most effective.[13]

Bosnia-Italy[14]

In the second round of the first round of qualification for the European Championship in 2022, the women's handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Italy with a score of 25:22 at the qualification tournament in Greece[15]

The team opened the match perfectly. They held the strings of the game in their hands, it was goal for goal, and towards the end of the half, the team kicked into gear and went to the break with a 15:12 advantage.[16]

In the continuation, the Italian women played better, and they equalized in the 50th minute, the score was 20:20 and it was an exciting finale. In the final, the bosnian handball players managed better for the final score 25:22. Bosnian team was led to victory by Edina Demić, Desire Kolašinac and Marija Gudelj with five goals. Anica Gudelj was great in goal. Among the Italian women, Romana Vesna Manojlović scored eight goals, followed by Ilaria Dalla Costa with five goals.[17]

This was the first official triumph for Bosnia women's handball selection after 12 years, as long as they did not have an active national team. With this victory, the national team also achieved EHF points, which return us to the EHF list, so Italy can also be called historic.[18]

Latvia-Bosnia

Radan Rovčanin's team defeated Latvia 31:19 in the third round of the group.[19]

Bosnian team were the better team from the start of the match, and they had a 16:7 score at halftime, and then routinely brought the match to an end with a final score of 31:19.

The most effective in Bosnian teams were Nikolina Čutura with six goals, Armina Isić with four, and Slađana Topić, Ana Vrančić, Jovana Ilić, Anđela Boras and Isidora Kršić scored three each. Admira Zvekić, Adelisa Dautović, Maja Knezović also scored their first goals for the national team. Madara Cibulska scored seven goals for Latvia, Lana Nikolajeva added four goals.[20]

After a 13-year break, BiH. handball players returned to the European scene with two victory's, and got EHF points. In all the the qualifying tournament in Greece went well. The only downside remains that only the first-placed team advanced to the main qualifiers. Greece got that place, who beat Italy 33:22 in the last match.[21]

After the tournament in Greece, the coach of Bosnian national team, Radan Rovčanin, commented:

We finished this tournament. I hope the Handball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is satisfied. The girls showed that they have character and we have to believe in them. I am most happy for them, I hope they will give better results in the next cycle. I am really satisfied after everything. I would like to thank the RSBiH Board of Directors for the conditions. I hope we will not stop at this, because BiH has material to look forward to in the future. This will also be a motive for clubs in BiH. I am proud of this group of girls.[22]

World Championship qualification in 2023

Handball players participated in the first phase of the World Championship qualification in 2023, which will be held in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

The selection played a double-header against Greece in the first phase. The first match was played November 2022, and the second leg four days later.

The team got a new coach before qualifications. Instead of Radan Rovčanin. The team's new coach was Alma Čehajić Hadžović,[23] who is currently at the helm of RK Hadžići. The first challenges awaited the new coach at the beginning of November, when the team played the qualifiers for the World Cup against Greece.[24]

The women's handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina played the first match of the first round of World Championship qualifiers against the favored selection of Greece in Cazin (JU Sportski centar " Salih Omerčević" Cazin) in a great atmosphere. After a great fight and a good handball performance, the Greek national team celebrated thanks to a turnaround in the last ten minutes. The result was 23:21 for Greece.[25]

The second leg was also played in Cazin. Bosnia and Herzegovina managed to celebrate in Cazin with 22:21 , but unfortunately it was not enough for us to win the next place.[26]

It was believed that Bosnia team would succeed in the hall in Cazin to make up for the first game and achieve a victory that would lead to the World Cup qualifiers, but unfortunately that did not happen. The handball players played very well during most of the game, but again experienced a big drop in the game at the very end when the Greek women managed to come back and finally win the next place.[27]

Qualifications for the 2024 European Women`s Handball Championship

After almost two decades, the women's senior handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina will play the main round of qualifications to go to a major competition.

The 2024 European Championship will be played in three countries, and will be hosted by Austria, Switzerland and Hungary. In addition to the hosts, Norway's selection as the current European champions secured direct placement. The remaining national teams will fight through the qualifications.[28]

In April 2023 Bh. handball players found out their opponents in the European Championship qualifiers. The Bosnian team got the the selections of Croatia, Romania and Greece as their opponents

Adnan Bašić [29], the coach of ŽRK Krivaja, got appointed as the new selector of the women's senior handball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[30] Adnan Bašić is a former handball player of Krivaja from Zavidovići, with whom, as a coach, he became the junior champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1995/1996 season.

For the October qualification matches, selector Bašić counted on these players:

Anica Gudelj (Corona Brasov), Anisa Selimović (Hadžići), Darjana Vukliš (Borac), Sara Majkić (Borac), Martina Pandža (Zrinjski), Ana Vrančić (PAOK), Amela Džakmić (Čair Skoplje), Desier Kolašinac (SG Kappel Windeck), Armina Isić (CS Dacia Mioveni), Sara Bašić (Krivaja), Edina Demić (Le Pouzin HB07), Adelisa Dautović (Krajina), Slađana Andrić (Borac), Matea Šumelj (Grude), Nejra Cerić (Krivaja), Azra Topčić (Krajina).[31]

Romania-Bosnia[32]

At 12.10.2023 the Bosnian team suffered a very heavy defeat in Romania (Sala Sporturilor Mioveni). After 26:11 at halftime, the game ended with 49:17.Special attention was drawn to the incredible situation at this match. Namely, one of the handball players of the bosnian national team passed the ball to the referee instead of one of her teammates. The referee accepted the ball, but looked very surprised at what had happened. She immediately threw the ball back to bosnian team members who continued their attack.[33]

Bosnia-Croatia[34]

The women's handball national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced its second defeat in the qualification for the European Championship. In Cazin (JU Sportski centar " Salih Omerčević" Cazin ) Croatia was better with a score of 31:17.[35]

The guests were the absolute favorites in this match, and they proved it in the end. From the first to the last minute of this match Croatian team certainly had an advantage. They created a five-goal advantage at the opening, and they kept that difference, to go to the break with a six-goal lead, 12:6. In the rest of the match they had a absolute dominance.[36] The difference grew to double digits, and it was only a question of how much the end result would bee. In the end, the selection of Bosnia and Herzegovina lost (31:17) with minus 14 and this is twas the second defeat in the qualifications. [37]

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ana Vrančić and Armina Isić scored four goals each, and Edina Demić added three. Nikolina Zadravec, Dejana Milosavljević and Andrea Šimara led Croatia to victory with five goals each. It is already clear that they and Croatia will go to the Euros.[38]
