Rosemarie Scolaro Moser is an American neuropsychologist.[1], author, scientific researcher, sports concussion specialist, and director of Princeton Neuropsychology-at RSM[2] (formerly RSM Psychology Center) and the Sports Concussion Center of New Jersey [3]in Princeton, New Jersey. She is recognized as an international expert in youth concussion providing her expertise in media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, CBS News and others.[4][5].[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] She has been named in the top 1.1% of experts worldwide in brain concussion.[15]

Life and education

The daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Moser was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1954, and in 1976 received a B.A. with honors in psychology for her thesis under the guidance of Jonathan Baron, titled Training the General Skill of Short Cuts. Moser completed an M.S. in Psychological Services in 1977, and a PhD in 1981 from University of Pennsylvania with a dissertation under the guidance of Peter J. Kuriloff[16] titled, Correlates of Perceived Role-Taking in Fraternity and Sorority Students.[17] She married Robert Lawrence Moser, MD[18] in 1978 and has two children, Rachel Moser Vassak[19] and Alexander Robert Moser and three grandchildren, Serena, Natalie, and Clara Vassak.

Achievements and awards

Moser serves as the first elected-female president of the Sports Neuropsychology Society from 2022 to 2024.[20] She also served as president of the New Jersey Psychological Association[21] (2003) and of the New Jersey Neuropsychological Society[22] (1999), and Treasurer of the National Academy of Neuropsychology[23] (2005–2007). Her awards include the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award for Clinical Excellence from the National Register of Health Service Psychologists[24], 2020 Distinguished Career Award from the Sports Neuropsychology Society[25], 2019 Community Pillar Award from the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey[26], 2013 National Italian American Hall of Fame, and 2003 American Psychological Association Heiser Presidential Award for Psychology Advocacy.[27] She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, National Academy of Neuropsychology[28], and Sports Neuropsychology Society.[29] She is board certified in Professional Neuropsychology[30] and Rehabilitation Psychology.[31]

Notable contributions

In the wake of youth violence and terrorism, Moser co-edited two books entitled, Shocking Violence: Youth Perpetrators and Victims and Shocking Violence II: Disaster, War, and Terrorism Affecting Our Youth[32][33], published in 2000 and 2003, respectively by Charles C. Thomas Publishers.

Moser is known for the earliest work and research in youth sports concussion. Her publications include Enduring Effects of Concussion in Youth Athletes published in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology (2002)[34] and The Prolonged Effects of Sports-related Concussion in High School Athletes, published in Neurosurgery (2005).[35] She and her research team later published the initial works demonstrating the utility of rest in concussion recovery, including Efficacy of Immediate and Delayed Cognitive and Physical Rest Following Sports-Related Concussion in the Journal of Pediatrics (2012)[36] and Examining Prescribed Rest as Treatment for Adolescents Who are Slow to Recover from Concussion published in Brain Injury (2014).[37] Her most recent areas of concussion research include cultural differences in concussion knowledge[38] and the criteria used for clinical decision making.

Moser has authored a comprehensive book on youth concussion for parents and the lay public titled, Ahead of the Game: The Parents' Guide to Youth Sports Concussion (Dartmouth College Press).[39][40] She taught on the graduate faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and the undergraduate faculty of the College of New Jersey[41] in the 1980s and has been an adjunct faculty member of Widener University since 1992.

Moser has served as a scientific expert/co-author for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC-P) Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Work Group[42] and for the systematic reviews of the International Consensus Conferences on Concussion in Sport (Berlin & Amsterdam).[43][44][45]
