At founding, it was an expansion of Toyota’s partnership with Microsoft, which began in 2011 to build a platform for telematics services.[5] As part of this expansion, Microsoft had a 5 percent stake in Toyota Connected.[6]

At inception, Toyota invested $5.5 million in Toyota Connected. Zach Hicks, former Chief Digital Officer at Toyota Motor North America, was the company’s first CEO.[7]

At launch in 2016, Toyota Connected announced it would support research related to artificial intelligence, as well as analyze data from vehicle sensors and cameras to develop algorithms for self-driving cars.[8]

In July 2022, Hicks stepped down as CEO and President, and Steve Basra replaced him.[9] In August 2023, former Toyota Connected Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Christopher Yang was appointed CEO, replacing Basra.[10] Yang reports to Toyota Connected Corporation President Keiji Yamamoto.[11]
