Tan Si En (Chinese: 陈思恩) is a Singapore-based film and TV producer.[1] Tan is best known for producing Dreaming & Dying (2023) by Nelson Yeo[2] and Wet Season (2019) by Anthony Chen. Her co productions include The Break Away (2021), as part of anthology The Year Of The Everlasting Storm which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 and Arnold Is A Model Student by Sorayos Prapapan which premiered at Locarno Film Festival 2022.[3]
Tan was the assistant producer of Pop Aye, which won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival,.[2] [4] and was Singapore's official submission to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.[5] by Kirsten Tan.
Early life and education
Tan was born in Singapore and grew up watching her family’s CRT TV (short for cathode-ray tube TV). As a kid, she was obsessed and mesmerised by TV and films. From a young age, she knew that she wanted to be behind the cameras and to be a part of the team that creates these images.[6][7]
Tan graduated top of the cohort from Film, Sound, and Video - School of Film and Media Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Later on, she read Philosophy at the National University of Singapore.[6]
Career
Tan started her film career through an internship with Fran Borgia and found her footing in the industry through Lai Weijie when he offered a position to be the assistant producer of Pop Aye.[6]
An alumnus of the prestigious Berlinale Talents and Rotterdam Lab, Tan produced Wet Season (2019) by Anthony Chen.[8] [9] The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for 6 Golden Horse Awards, with Yeo Yann Yann winning Golden Horse, for Best Actress.[10]
Tan co produced The Break Away (2021), as part of anthology The Year Of The Everlasting Storm which premiered in Cannes Film Festival 2021 and Arnold Is A Model Student by Sorayos Prapapan premiered in Locarno Film Festival 2022. She is also developing and co producing prominent award-winning projects such as This City is a Battlefield by Mouly Surya, Some Nights I Feel Like Walking by Petersen Vargas, among others.
She is known for her passion in championing talents from the Singaporean and Southeast Asian film industry visible in her work at the Singapore International Film Festival, where she took charge of the offscreen programmes and oversaw development and industry initiatives at the SGIFF Film Academy. In the last few years, she also spearheaded the Objectifs Short Film Incubator and Momo Distribution Grant.[11]
Tan’s producing efforts have been featured in publications such as Screendaily, Variety, Channel News Asia and Yahoo. In 2020, she was recognised as one of The Straits Times 30 under 30 - The Arts[12]. In 2021, she was honoured with the youth inspiration award given by National Youth Council and Scape[13]. In 2022, she was nominated as Women of The Future Awards[14]
