ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:26, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

link, you're it

SilkTork, among several capable editors, you tagged/mentioned/linked my username over at Talk:China–India relations 58 days or 1392 hours ago. I've tried to find ways to acknowledge this, thinking up replies on the talk page, however I've come short. This actually doesn't even need acknowledging. I could just keep at the article, or keep away. However it bothers me to not interact with the message. Irrespective of whether it just a general quick five minute assessment, a bit of encouragement to stay with the article, ... anyway ...

Bilateral relation articles like this cover a very wide set of topics. If the editors intend to also address a few linked articles the scope becomes expansive. It can be a lot for editors, for one editor. I've been told this before over here and in relation to this very article. Now what I like is that you mentioned the article is currently quality assessed as Start. And it needs some work to even take it to C. That's a manageable way to look at this. Also, observing other bilateral relation articles on Wikipedia, those which are good or featured articles, those which are at B or even C, gives some direction. Please help with identification of creeks

May I request you to please create OSM map for the Sir Creek to label each of the six main creeks in Indian area (actualy 7 (or 8?) creeks because Vian Wari Creek splits into Vianbari and Viyanbari).

  • 1. Sir Creek
    • Harami Nala: seems its the name of loopy serpentine coiled north-end of Sir Creek
  • 2. Vian Wari Creek splits into
    • 2.1 Vianbari and
    • 2.2 Viyanbari
  • Pir Sanai,
  • Pabevari,
  • Padala (16 km (9.9 mi) southeast from Sir Creek),
  • Kori (34 km (21 mi east/southeast from Sir Creek), easternmost creek in India.

I do not have any source or knowledge of detailed map showing name labels and order of creeks (ideally good to know their start and end points).

Request is due to your excellent work on LAC map. Thanks in advance. 58.182.190.156 (talk) 20:16, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't suggest using Template:OSM Location map for this as per the wording of the request. Relevant reasoning (1) there is no option to switch off certain map features (2) there is no option to use only terrain/satellite layers. Choose another map type. There are so many more questions and comments that I would need to ask and say to make more sense of your request.
I am currently with another map set for now and that is turning out its own challenges and presentation difficulties; lakes/tanks in Bangalore. FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 13:57, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, During covid, I had submit request to approve and "notify" these following as NH (national highway of minimum 2 lanes with paved shoulders, minimum 10 meter wide): East-West_Industrial_Corridor_Highway,_Arunachal_Pradesh. Some of these were/are undertaken by BRO as 10 foot track (3 meter wide), hence connectivity exists for NH construction. 58.182.190.156 (talk) 20:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is really awesome! (of course, with regard to the process you've outlined above, I don't understand it fully) I'm glad that all the maps on this one are loading now! Speaking of roads ... potholes!! More need not be said! FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 14:16, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding tools

MusikAnimal, first of all thank you again for all the tools that already exist.
I just wanted to ask if there is any tool that provides information regarding a Wikipedia user's edits according to WikiProjects connected to the article's edited? Just to be clear, say I make two edits to Aiphanes, the tool will show that I have made two edits under WikiProject Plants. FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 06:31, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't exist as far as I know, but it totally could. Special:PageAssessments has WikiProjects in a machine-readable format, so the data is there. There's also xtools:categoryedits, but that will look for your edits on talk pages, since here on enwiki that's where the WikiProject categorization goes. I might be able to add an option, "Use subject page instead of talk page" to get around that. This would allow you to see all edits a user made within a given WikiProject, but would not aggregate all edits the user made across all WikiProjects (i.e. "you've made 10 edits to WikiProject Plants, 5 edits to WikiProject Spiders, etc.). Are you looking more for the former or the latter? MusikAnimal talk 16:44, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
MusikAnimal In short, I was originally talking about the latter. What I wanted to do, analyze editing patterns for useful interpretation, can be done by xtools:categoryedits as well.
However I'm not sure an outright former or latter would do now. Some underlying reasoning seems necessary, though I don't want to stretch it. Let me approach this as a beginner user of the tool. On the basis of what xtools:categoryedits was doing today, I had to add the immediate category for it to register edits. So if I had to do this for myself, I know exactly which categories to enter in the larger categorical hierarchies. And this would give me some idea of my editing patterns. However, as my edit count increases (provided I increase the diversity of my edits) this becomes more time-consuming. (Speaking of time-consuming, I remember I was manually doing what "Userviews Analysis" now does through "Pageviews Analysis".) If I had to analyze the edits of others using xtools:categoryedits, it would first take time figuring out which categories to enter and there would still be a chance that I miss some something. However the tool does compare "Total edits" with the edits in those categories which really helps... a bunch of detailing...
A more fundamental question is the difference between-
  1. User edits according to category (that is edits on the article mainspace in that category, not category-space itself)
  2. User edits according to WikiProject (that is edits on the article mainspace in that WikiProject, not the WikiProject itself)
On the face of it, user edits according to category could give more focused meaning as compared to more generalized WikiProjects. If a certain level of hierarchal category levels can be included past the immediate category, that gives more scope for interpretation I would assume. The difference between these navigational links in term of comprehensiveness of use could be a reason for error. There are "inactive" wikiProjects, though that doesn't affect interpretation. Another bunch of details.
Why hasn't this been done before? If someone had to make such a request, where else would they make such requests apart from directly approaching you? Like Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)? Does this throw up any ethical questions, nothing seems to stand out. No need to answer all this, this is just for explanation sake. Analyzing editing patterns for useful interpretation is the goal. FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 16:50, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Aggregating every category a user edits in, and generating a page with each category and number of edits, is probably going to be very slow or possibly technically infeasible. But, I have not done any test queries. If that is fast enough, it may be appropriate for XTools. Something built for WikiProjects specifically may be best written as a separate tool, though. Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab) is a suitable place to submit this kind idea, but as it's really a request (and likely not controversial in nature), you could just ask if anyone is interested in building it at WP:VPT. MusikAnimal talk 16:19, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I will submit a request at village pump. FacetsOfNonStickPans (talk) 09:40, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
