Grease: You're The One That I Want is an NBC reality series designed to cast the lead roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in a June 2007 Broadway revival of the musical Grease directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winning Kathleen Marshall.

Background

In 2005, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and David Ian agreed to be co-producers on London production of the Sound of Music. After approaching and being turned down by actress Scarlet Johansson, Lloyd-Webber approached the BBC, and created the reality TV show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, hosted by Graham Norton.

Interest

According to a report from the Associated Press, interest in the upcoming revival generated by the program proved to be a box-office bonanza. In the two days following the first broadcast, $1.3 million worth of tickets were sold.

Trivia

  • The line "You're/You are.... the one(s) that we want to go to Grease Academy" became the catchphrase of David Ian for episodes 1 & 2 and "You're/You are the one that we want/the one that we want, too" became the catchphrase of Billy Bush for episode 3.
  • The show's title is taken from a song from the 1978 movie, You're The One That I Want, that ironically was not featured in the original Broadway production (but will be featured in the 2007 revival of the show)
  • In the early promos for the series, televised in November and early December 2006, the logo was the same one used for the film, but since mid-December it has been altered slightly.
