Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud (Somali: Maxamed Cumar Xaaji Maxamuud, Arabic: محمد عمر حاج محمود ‎) (born 1981 in Hargeisa, Somaliland) is a Somaliland academic, politician and diplomat who has been Somaliland Representative to Taiwan since July 2020.

Education

Mohamed is a PhD researcher in Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University. He obtained a B.A (Hon) Degree in Political Science, a Post-Graduate Degree in Security Studies and a Master’s degree in Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom.[1][2][3]

Political career

Mohamed has been a Senior Political Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland. Prior to the foreign policy career, he worked with the Ministry of Finance Development of Somaliland as a Senior Advisor for microeconomic policy and strategic planning reform. He also worked with the international and UN agencies in Somaliland and abroad as an Executive Director, a Programme Manager, Senior Policy Advisor and Mentor for thirteen years. Mohamed is currently appointed by the President of Republic of Somaliland as Somaliland’s Chief Representative to Taiwan.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Academic career

Mohamed is a political analyst, and contributes to both Somali and English-speaking media and newspapers.[11][12] He studies the trends of the international political economy, particularly the economic and political development systems in Africa. He is also an expert on foreign relations of the Greater Horn of Africa. He also published many articles to international and regional peer-reviewed journals in which he has written on globalization, policy papers on Africa and global trade as well as aid and good governance.[13][14][15][16][17]. Other academic research areas include the homegrown Somaliland peace-building and democracy and the foreign aid dependency of Somalia.[18][19][20]

Personal life

Mohamed is married with Samira and have 3 children.
