  • 01:4601:46, 15 May 2024 diff hist −2 Tucson, ArizonaFixed my earlier translation of the O'odham name of the city. The most common translation that I have heard is the previous version of the translation, but further personal research has led me to believe this is incorrect. There is no specifier or postposition present to give the meaning "at...". Personal communication with Dr. Ofelia Zepeda has reinforced the idea that this is a simple verbal phrase used as a place name, which is a very common O'odham method of constructing location names. Page previously referred to the O'odham name, but did not actually include the name of the site. Wa:k is also the name of the community surrounding the site, but a sign at the site (personal research) refers to the site of the Mission as a whole as "Wa:k". Tags: Mobile edit Mobile web edit

The hyphen that previously existed between "Cuk Ṣon" has been removed, as it implies an affixation process in O'odham, which this is not. There are also some theories that the name could be referring to the collection of foothills that Tucson lies between, but because neither form is plural (the plural of "ṣon" is "ṣo:ṣon") this is unlikely
