Empire names[edit]

I'm afraid I'm quite new to SE Asian history, though I find it quite fascinating. I wrote up the article on Jayavarman I some time ago, based on the one book I have, and now I am trying to add him (and all the other Kamboja/Khmer rulers) into the lists of state leaders by year. However, I'm a bit confused as to where to use "Kamboja" and where "Chenla" and like that. There was a Chenla king named Jayavarman earlier in the 7th century, and then there's Jayavarman I. Is he King of Khmer? of Kamboja? of Chenla? I just want to make sure I have my terminology right before I go adding him to a dozen pages, and then going and having to fix it later. Thank you.
