Welcome to the American Civil War portal talk page

Before posting on this page, please observe these basic guidelines so that discussion stays focused in the appropriate areas. Since each portal sub page has its own talk page and since these may not be immediately obvious to the user, I've created a talk map below in order to point all talk to correct locations.

This talk page is devoted to discussing portal box arrangement, what boxes should or should not appear, and what page formatting should apply. Please keep discussion on this page to that subject matter, or your talk may be moved to the correct page by portal maintainers.

If your post pertains to any of the content of any of the boxes, take that discussion to the portal talk listed below.

  1. Portal talk:American Civil War/box-header
  2. Portal talk:American Civil War/Intro
  3. Portal talk:American Civil War/Featured article
  4. Portal talk:American Civil War/Did you know
  5. Portal talk:American Civil War/American Civil War news
  6. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected biography
  7. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected picture
  8. Portal talk:American Civil War/Selected article
  9. Portal talk:American Civil War/American Civil War topics
  10. Portal talk:American Civil War/Things you can do
  11. Portal talk:American Civil War/Related portals
  12. Portal talk:American Civil War/Queue
  13. Portal talk:American Civil War/Grand Parade of the States

If your talk isn't related to any of the above, feel free to post boldly here. Welcome to this talk page and this portal. Let's try to fight out our controversies here (on these talk pages) so they don't have to read them over there (on the portal pages). BusterD 12:17, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Improvement and maintenance

I think we should go ahead and fill in the red links above and maybe start a Portal:American Civil War/Queue page for dynamic content. Can we recruit more participants maybe? • CQ 13:53, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm done fiddling. Now it's time to create archives and build the queue. if you go to my portal subpage you can see some of the content I've prequalified. Once we announce to the task force this is constructed, we can probably draw more attention. BusterD 23:29, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Joining

Hello guys. I'm Sean and I'd like to join the American Civil War Task Force, if I may. I have been studying the war for most of my life, and I am a Civil War re-enactor from the state of Georgia (1st.Battalion Invalid Corps, Company D). If there is anything I can do to help please feel free to ask.--Lord Balin 10:48, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome and you're certainly welcome to help here on the portal pages. I'm about to turn automation on here at the portal, so that means that work added should be put into the portal queue. See the map for better understanding. Right now what needs to be done is to write some new "Did you know" copy, and place it in appropriate queue boxes. If you're interested, reply here and I'll walk you through that process in the next day or two. Another task which keeps escaping me is writing new News links. Other than that, I have a fair idea of what will go where and why. Thanks a ton for offering assistance, I will definitely ask for some. BusterD 13:35, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

After a long pause in building, this page is no longer under construction

Woohoo! Please keep content war reversions to the actual page space, not the temporary frame which offers the content for expanded view. Other than that, please enjoy and feel free to edit, suggest and comment. BusterD 14:37, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Portal peer review

This portal was constructed last year, and after a lengthy wikibreak on the part of this editor was finally automated in August. The portal is now fully automatic with the exception of the "featured article" box; I haven't figured out "CURRENTQUARTER" variable. I may make that a monthly queue item now that the number of ACW FA's has increased and the rate of new content-area FAs has increased significantly. The portal draws content heavily on the article ratings listed in the American Civil War Task Force, and utilizes the TF's announcement template and a custom ACW Menu template as "What you can do" and "ACW Topics" list respectfully. The only red links are those contained in the "Requested articles" section of the "What you can do" section. I'd love a tiny bit of help with the colors in the ACW Menu template to get the header and left side bar colors exactly right. I also have squeezed the "Did you know" section down in size a bit to compensate for the average length of the "This week..." section. Would love to see some more editors on the page and queue. I changed the colors, see if You like. In "Did you know..." start the lines with "...that". feydey 07:26, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
That looks nice and thanks. I like the portal colors exactly the way they were, but the {{American Civil War menu}} suffered when we switched the underlying template to the Mil Hist one. On that menu, ideally the header should match the surrounding light gray space (now blue space) and the left hand subhead bar should be identical to the Union subsubheads. I switched it back; we played with colors quite a bit, and box header is where we want it. BusterD 12:31, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
