Marina Machete Reis[1] (Portuguese pronunciation: [mɐˈɾinɐ mɐˈʃetɨ]; born 1 October 1995) is a Portuguese model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Portugal 2023.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Machete is the first[6] Portuguese transgender woman[6] to participate in the Miss Universe contest.[4][6][8][9][10] She represented Portugal at the Miss Universe 2023[4][11][12] pageant in El Salvador and finished as a top 20 semifinalist, becoming the first trans woman to place. She is the second trans woman to compete in Miss Universe in 2023 after Rikkie Kollé[14] of Netherlands.[15][16] She also won the Most Confident Award at the competition.[5][7][17][18][2]

In 2018, Machete started working as a flight attendant.[5][19][20][2] She is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English.[6] Days before winning the Miss Portugal title, the model took to social media to say she was proud to be the first trans woman to compete for the title. The post has more than 500 comments.[21][2][22][23] Her national victory took over the internet with praise and controversies alike.[24][25][26]

Early life[edit]

Machete was born on 1 October 1995, in a small town of Palmela,[13] located in the Lisboa Region and Setúbal District, about 25 km (16 mi) south of Lisbon. Machete is a devout advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity.[12][27] She was assigned male at birth before undergoing gender reassignment.[21] As a result of being a transgender woman, she experienced a lot of backlash and severe critics on Portuguese media after being crowned as Miss Universe Portugal.[28]

Machete posted to Instagram over the weekend after winning the contest, “to all of you watching, I just want to say that, just like the universe, your possibilities in life are limitless...So don’t limit yourself to any dream that you have.”[23]

Miss Universe Portugal 2023[edit]

At 28 years old, Machete, a flight attendant, placed ahead of 16 other contestants.[12][11][4] She will compete at the Miss Universe 2023[4][11][12] in El Salvador.[13] She has used her platform to advocate for trans rights, emphasizing the need to combat "transphobia and intolerance" around the world.[2][29][30]

Miss Portugal 2023[edit]

On Thursday 2023,[31][32] Machete was awarded the Miss Portugal title in Borba, in the southeastern Evora region, Portugal.[4][6][7][33][27][34]

Miss Universe 2023[edit]

She, along with Rikkie Kollé of the Netherlands, were the second and third trans women to compete at Miss Universe after Ángela Ponce of Spain in 2018. At the Miss Universe 2023, she placed among the Top 20 semifinalists, making history as the first trans woman to place at Miss Universe in the pageant's history.
