John Cooney (boxer)
John Henry Cooney (2 April, 1996 – 8 February, 2025), known professionally as The Kid, was an Irish boxer.[1]
Early life and career
[edit]Cooney was born in Ealing, London to Irish parents, Hughie Cooney, and Tina Cooney. He was the brother of Aaron Cooney, and Conor Cooney. [2] [3] In 2023, Cooney turned professional and swiftly made a name for himself in the super-featherweight division. He secured the Celtic super-featherweight title in November 2023 with a victory over Liam Gaynor in Dublin. His professional record stood at 11 wins and 1 loss.[4] During his career, he had 12 professional fights.[5] He also was the fiancée of Emmaleen Maher.
Death
[edit]On 1 February 2025, during a fight against Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall in Belfast, Cooney suffered brain damage and he was hospitalised.[6] His death at the age of 28 was reported on 8 February, due to the brain damage he sustained.[7][8][9]
