Edit request on 18 January 2016[edit]

Please add {{ShadowsCommons}}. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:16, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not done This is a special local copy indicating that we do not want any files to use this name, that template suggests editors take actions that are not appropriate for this use case. If this is outdated, perhaps it is time to bring this to a deletion discussion and just remove it? — xaosflux Talk 12:39, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Xaosflux: That is inconsistent with other edit requests which typically have been handled by User:Redrose64. The {{ShadowsCommons}} template informs that there is a conflict with Commons and that the conflict needs to be solved in some way, and mentions some common solutions, although other solutions may be appropriate in certain cases. The conflict needs to be solved regardless of whether the file is tagged, but it's easier to keep track of conflicts if they are properly tagged. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:23, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've reactivated this request, but am not sure of the best way to do this, will leave to any other request patroller to review. — xaosflux Talk 16:26, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Xaosflux & User:Redrose64: These placeholder images are problematic in multiple ways. One problem is that they only hide the problem: pictures can't be created locally, but they can be created on Commons, and users who upload files to Commons will then not understand why they see a different picture than the one which was just uploaded. Today, I discovered two more placeholder images which shadow Commons. Another problem is that they show up in maintenance categories and other places, making it harder to go through some file lists. I think that it would be better if we simply deleted all of them and replaced them with fully protected redirects on Commons to c:File:Name.svg. That way, the file names would be blocked everywhere, not just on English Wikipedia. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:48, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not our decision, must be discussed on commons. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:51, 18 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Right. That would require an RfC somewhere, probably on both projects. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:07, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
