Summary

Description Archaic form of the character Tiān 天 ("Heaven", "Sky", "God"), of the Zhou dynasty and culture. It represents a human-like being whose head-mind is informed by the astral square of the north celestial pole (Big Dipper, swastika), and derives from the Shang archaic character for 帝, "Deity". Further information in John C. Didier's In and Outside the Square: The Sky and the Power of Belief in Ancient China and the World - Volume III: Terrestrial and Celestial Transformations in Zhou and Early-Imperial China, c. 4500 BC – AD 200 (Sino-Platonic Papers, n. 192, Victor H. Mair, University of Pennsylvania, 2009).
