La Balade pour la Paix, rue Sherbrooke, Montréal, 2017

Pour Kusama, artiste excentrique de notoriété internationale, l'art et l'écriture permettent d'échaper à l'ordre social rigide, hiérarchique et et patricarcal de l'après-guerre au Japon. Métaphore de la survie, la citrouille lui inspire beaucoup de respect. Motif récurrent dans son oeuvre, c'est à la fois l'aliment de base dans le Japon dévasté à l'issue de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la graine dont son père pépiniériste fait commerce. Cette cucurbitacée, un légume modeste, robuste et généreux, devient une forme d'autoportrait ou d'alter ego.
