Summary

Description

Publicity photo of the William Crooks at Union Station, Washington, D.C. on 20 September 1927 en route to the Fair of the Iron Horse, held September 24 - October 8, 1927 in Halethorpe, MD.

The locomotive was built in 1861 by the New Jersey Locomotive and Machine Company of Paterson, New Jersey, and was obsolete before the year 1900. The president of the Great Northern (US) Railway, James J. Hill, saved the William Crooks from the scrapyard by appointing it his own personal locomotive. Its last official duty was to help Hill celebrate his birthday in 1909, but the Great Northern frequently brought out the old locomotive thereafter for publicity and various railroad-related events. The last trip the locomotive made under its own power was to the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948.
