Summary

Description Wellington Monument in Somerset, UK. 53 metres high and situated in the Blackdown Hills near Wellington, it was erected (from 1817 to 1854) in tribute to the Duke of Wellington, the town of Wellington having given its name to the dukedom. Stairs rise to the top of the monument, but following concerns over the stability of the obelisk, the base of the monument was closed to the public in 2007. Renovations are currently ongoing. The corrugated steel barrier was painted by children from local schools.
