Summary

Description

View of a U.S. Navy anti-submarine warfare demonstration during the inter-American Naval conference, 1-3 June 1960. An Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 1 (HS-1) uses its sonar while Grumman S2F-1 Tracker and Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune patrol planes fly over the submarine USS Darter (SS-576), the radar picket destroyer escort USS Calcaterra (DER-390), and the destroyer USS Hazelwood (DD-531). The demonstration was witnessed by Naval leaders of 10 American nations.

Two of the Trackers and the three Neptunes were assigned to Air Test and Development Squadron 1 (VX-1), tailcode "JA". The other four Trackers were from Anti-Submarine Squadron 30 (VS-30). Note that Hazelwood has a, at that time still experimental, Gyrodyne DSN DASH drone on her flight deck.
