Then my tussle with The Madman began.If my very life had been at stake I could not (39) THE THEATRE THROUGH ITS STAGE DOOR have worked myself up to finer frenzies. WhenI came to the finish of my maniacal exhibitionI discovered with dismay that I had torn bothsleeves of my shirt to tatters. McCullough andhis friends applauded, and then the great actorpleasantly bade me good-by. The very next morning he sent me a letteroffering me a good position in his company.That is why now, night after night, I go downon the stage of the Belasco Theatre after theperformance is over, and listen to recitationsand readings by people who think the planetsin the heavens ordained that they should act.I know the percentage who have ability will bewoefully small, but I cannot forget at suchtimes the kindly encouragement and helpinghand that John McCullough held out to me-
