INSIDE THE BATTERY NORTH OF FORT McREE AT PENSACOLA federate camps and men in general pretended to nothing like the smartness of the well-equipped boysin blue. Weapons, however, were eared for. All through the Southern camps, soldiers could be foundbusily polishing their muskets, swords, and bayonets with wood ashes well moistened. Bright musketsand tattered uniforms went together in the Army of Northern Virginia. Swords, too, were bright in Florida,judging from the two young volunteers flourishing theirs in the photograph. This is one of the batterieswhich later bombarded Fort Pickens and the Union fleet. It was held by the Confederates until May 2, 1862.
