Summary

Description
English: The opposition effect, the brightening of asteroids at very small phase angles, is in practise modelled by a two parameter system, the H-G magnitude system. Here, H is the absolute magnitude of the asteroid, and G is called the slope parameter.

Following the description in Figure 1 of https://www.britastro.org/asteroids/dymock4.pdf, the graphic represents the intercept of the linear portion of the phase curve (phase angle 10-20°) with the y-axis for different values of G.

Relation between slope parameter G, and the opposition surge. Larger G corresponds to a less pronounced opposition effect. For most asteroids, a value of G=0.15 is assumed, corresponding to an opposition surge of 0.3 mag.
