Summary

Description
English: Senator Smith with Pope John Paul II in Vatican City. The Senator presented the Pontiff with the Congressional Gold Medal. Senator Smith, a Catholic, was one of the original sponsors of legislation calling upon Congress to authorize a medal in recognition of the Pope's "many and enduring contributions to peace and religious understanding, his dedication to freedom, and his role as a preeminent moral authority." The measure passed the Senate and House this summer and was signed into law on July 27th.
