According to some sources (comparison at p. 130-131, New Statesmen, paragraph 6), Utermohlen was influenced by Francis Bacon's Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1953) This drawing is used in the article to show a comparison between the two images in the Influences section.
