According to the liner notes of "Mississippi Blues Vol. 3" (Document Records Cat#DOCD-5671), this photo was taken as a publicity photo. According to the allmusic.com biography, written by Stacia Proefrock, this photo is the only known photo of Robert Petway. Since these are both credible sources, and since no other photo could be found, this photo should fall under either "promotional" or "historical" or both. - Petway's birth year of circa 1908 is an estimate; he may have been born earlier than that. He would certainly be over 100 years old if he is still alive.
- His recordings ceased in 1942. An associate of his said that no one really knew what became of Petway: "nobody I know heard what become of him."
- The image shown here is said to be the only photo in existence of Robert Petway, taken circa 1941, not long before he vanished from the world of music. As of this writing, 70 years have passed. If he is still living, Petway would look considerably different due to the aging process, than he did in the 1941 photo taken when he was still an active musician.
- Though Petway's time as an active musician was brief, his music influenced later blues musicians such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix. Muddy Waters, in particular, was an influence on the Rolling Stones. Petway's influence on such noted musicians makes his brief music career notable also.
