The Whitney Portal is 13 miles west of Lone Pine, CA, at the end of Whitney Portal Road. It is in a heavily wooded canyon, with towering granite cliffs on either side.
The first time I drove it I had the idea that it would take me to the peak. But from the parking lot of Whtiney Portal it is a 21 mile round trip to the mountain and then a 6,000 foot climb in elevation change to the top. Only the most hardy and experience climbers should attempt it.
Google 'Hulda Crooks' to read about a lady nicknamed "Grandma Whitney" for her two dozen climbs up 14,495-foot Mt. Whitney between the ages of 66 and 91 making her the oldest woman to scale the peak

By the way, Mt. Whitney is 'hiding' in this picture. You can just see her under the lowest cloud in the right center. She sits behind the three spires.
