4-6-2

Portion used

700x348

Low resolution?

Yes

Purpose of use

Shows landmark steam locomotive class. The Q1 was the first class worldwide to be designed as a 4-6-2 or 'Pacific', with the deliberate feature of the rear trailing axle to support an oversized firebox for hard coals, and the extra driving axle compared to the previous 4-4-2 Atlantics, owing to the need for extra adhesive traction for increasingly powerful locomotives.

Replaceable?

No, as all examples of the class have since been scrapped.
