Summary

Description
English: Front page of the Provincal Freeman, September 2, 1854. The newspaper was founded by Mary Ann Shadd Cary and was published in Ontario from 1853 to 1857. Through the paper, Shadd Cary advocated for the causes of abolitionism, women's rights, and temperance. It was the first newspaper published by a black woman in North America, and the first published by any Canadian woman.
