English: Proof banknote designed by William Home Lizars for Carlisle City and District Banking Company, 1800s, Garratt Collection. On Display at the British Museum in London. During the 1700s and 1800s, there was a large expansion of local banks, in the UK, and each bank chose images for their paper money. The Carlisle note emphasizes the town's industrial features.
