Osmanlı Devleti'nin piyasa ekonomisine entegre olmasıyla şirketlerde görünürlük kazanmaya başlayan kadınların emeği, yakın zamana dek tarih anlatılarında yeterli ölçüde yer bulamaz. 1911'de kadın personel alımına başlayan Osmanlı Bankası'nda kadınlar, İstanbul'dan Mersin'e, Selanik'ten Beyrut'a çeşitli şubelerde görev alır. Personel sayısında azaltmaya gidildiğinde öncelikli olarak işten çıkarılan kadınların kariyerlerinde yükselmesi ancak 1940'larda mümkün olur.
