Purpose of use

To illustrate a poignant scene in the episode (infobox). The scene features the death of Jonathan Kent, the adoptive father of Clark Kent. Originally, there were two potential plot lines that the writers wanted to pursue: either Clark and Lana would get married "for real" or one of Clark's parents would die. The producers eventually went with the latter and chose to kill of Jonathan Kent. John Schneider, who portrayed Jonathan was happy with the way his character was killed and argued that his character exited the show "like a hero" and compared him to John Wayne. The scene of Kent's death is expounded upon in the "Production" section of the parent article.
