Summary

Description

Johnny Campbell played for Tranmere Rovers, at right-back, from 1914 to 1929 but never became a professional, preferring to retain his amateur status. Despite the handicap of a bullet embedded in his skull, he lived to the grand age of eighty-seven and it was his proud boast to have never been cautioned or send off.
Three contemporary sources, written by Tranmere Rovers historians, contain this image:

  • Bishop, Peter (1 November 1998) Tranmere Rovers Football Club, Images of England, Stroud: Tempus ISBN: 978-0752415055.
  • Upton, Gilbert; Wilson, Steve (November 1997) Tranmere Rovers 1921–1997: A Complete Record ISBN: 978-0951864821.
  • Upton, Gilbert; Wilson, Steve; Bishop, Peter (24 July 2009) Tranmere Rovers: The Complete Record, Breedon ISBN: 978-1859837115.
Bishop (1998) states that its images appeared originally in the Birkenhead News or Liverpool Echo. None of the sources were found to contain any further details of the photograph's provenance.
