[... let that ocean [of esoteric knowledge] who is Eşrefzade in Iznik enjoy [any spiritual benefit]. In the year 956, in the month of Jumada'l-Ula. The painter [responsible is] the poor and humble Musli.]
Carswell (2006) pp. 66-67
Notes

956 AH corresponds to 9 Feb 1549 - 29 Jan 1550

The lamp was found in the middle of the 19th century on the Haram in Jeruslem. There is a similar fragmentary lamp in the British Museum G.1983.57

The mosque lamp is an important object as the inscription not only gives a date but also mentions Iznik. A groups of objects that differ in overall style, have motifs that are present on the lamp. This suggests that they were all made by the same craftsman (Musli) or by his workshop at around the same time.

A spherical hanging ornament with a similar decoration is in the Benaki Museum in Athens.(Carswell 2006, pp.67-68) The inventory number is ΓΕ 9. A photograph of the ornament is also available from the Google art project.
