Description The derelect airlock over the Hollinside Shaft of Axwell Park Colliery, viewed in 2014, 31 yeas after it was finally abandoned. The shaft is situated in Clockburn Lonnen, a steep wooded valley roughly a mile to the south of the other shafts, which were just off Whickham Bank. The colliery closed in 1954, two years after miners from Marley Hill Colliery began working the coal seams beneath Hollinside and Gibside via the newly constructed Clockburn Drift. The Hollinside Shaft was given a new lease of life when the NCB fitted a fan to ventilate these workings, which were some distance from Marley Hill Colliery itself. It was finally abandoned in 1983, when the drift closed along with Marley Hill colliery, and has been backfilled with soil and rubble.
