Summary

Description
English: The Hampton Shops Building at 18-20 East 50th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 1915-16 and was designed by Rouse & Goldstone and Joseph L. Steinem in the Neo-Gothic or Perpendicular Gothic style. The style was chosen because it complemented the St. Patrick's Cathedral complex across the street from the building. The building has no setbacks, as it was built before zoning ordinances required them. The 11-story has a facade of grey terra cotta which looks like granite. The Hampton Shops, founded in the early 1860s as the Grand Rapids Furniture Company, sold traditionally-styled furniture. The firm went bankrupt in 1938, and the building was divided up and leased to businesses in the art and design field. The building was designated a New York City landmark on November 22, 2016.
