Summary

Description
English: Florence Nightingale The London Road statue of Florence Nightingale, including the surrounding stonework, is a Listed Building (Grade 2). Dating from 1914, it stands in front of the grounds to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. The sculptor was Countess Feodora Gleichen, who was related to Queen Victoria. She was the first woman member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Florence Nightingale's family had a home at Lea Hurst, near Derby. In 1860 Dr William Ogle was appointed to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary at a time when the mortality rate amongst patients was high. After lengthy correspondence with Florence, it was decided to rebuild the hospital along lines suggested by her. The new DRI opened in 1869 with a wing named after her.
