The exhibition was first shown in Munich, Germany from 19 July to 30 November 1937; The catalogue, however, was published in Berlin (1937), ready as a visitor's companion when the art was on display in the Berliner Kunsthalle from 26 February to 8 May 1938. The exhibition kept on touring several cities until 1941. The sculpture in the cover photo is "Der neue Mensch" ("L'Homme nouveau") made by Otto Freundlich (1878–1943) in 1912.
