Description
English: "Photograph shows educator Emma V. Brown (1846-1902), a former student and protége of Emily Howland. In 1864 Brown was appointed teacher at the first government funded school for African American children in Washington, D.C. By 1872 she was principal of the District's prestigious Sumner School. Brown married educator Henry P. Montgtomery in 1879. She and her husband are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Washington, D.C."
