Summary

Description

Cortinarius holojanthinus Peintner & M.M. Moser

Image location: Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

Finally picked up a specimen to preserve. This one is particularly nice: dry cap, surface and flesh and hymenium all purplish. Clearly associated with Nothofagus pumilio.

(number 0226.4, page 175)

Used references: []Thaxterogaster violaceus This truffle-like, hypogeous Thaxterogaster is well distinguished by its shape and color. The cap of the peculiar fruiting bodies does not open to expose the lamellae, but always remains closed. The fungus develops in litter of Nothofagus (ectomycorrhiza) and due to the lack of an up-lifting stipe not more than the top of the cap emerges above the surface of the forest floor. Pileus up to 6 cm diam., globose, irregularly subglobose, whole fruiting body more or less fig-shaped, pale lilac soon turning grey to silvery, sericeous, dry. Gleba (lamellae) composed of irregular, small chambers, rust brown*. Stipe -5 x – 2.2 cm, turbinate to subcylindrical, often rudimentary, rarely transcurrent through the gleba, white, dry. Flesh present in stipe only, white. Odor and taste not distinctive but fetid in overmature specimens. (Gamundi, I. & E. Horak, 1995. “Fungi of the Andean-Patagonian forests.” Buenos Aires: Vazquez Mazzini Editores, pg. 119.)
