Summary

Description
English: (a) Star has onion-layered shells of elements, electron neutrinos are created leading to neutronization of the iron core. (b) When gravitational pressure exceeds the electron degeneracy pressure, in-fall of material begins, neutrinos became trapped inside the core. (c) Repulsive nuclear forces generate an outward-propagating shock wave (red) in the outer core, triggering the supernova explosion, release of trapped neutrinos as a burst. (d) The shock begins to stall as the neutrino burst and iron photo-disintegration drains its energy away. (e) Neutrino heating energize the shock wave, the stalled shock wave is rejuvenated when thermal pressure increases above the pressure of the infalling material (black) (f) The material outside the inner core is ejected, leaving behind only a degenerate remnant.

This image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Core collapse mechanism.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
