English: A Boston & Providence Railroad milestone reading "B. 54 Km 33.55 M" along the East Junction Branch, seen in December 2021. Like most of the other remaining kilometer posts on the line, it is in the wrong location - 54 kilometers from Boston is at East Junction in Attleboro. Captain William Gibbs McNeill, who built the B&P, was enamored of the European kilometer system but failed to secure more widespread adoption of the unit on American railroads; however, it is not clear whether he or later surveyors set the mileposts. |
