Fair use rationale[edit]

This screenshot falls under Fair use for the article Randy Johnson because:

  • It is a photograph of an event that is significant with respect to Johnson as a baseball player and with respect to the baseball culture.
  • No free image is available to illustrate the event, and because it is unrepeatable, a free photograph cannot be taken to replace this one.
  • It meets general Wikipedia content requirements.
  • It is very low resolution.
  • It meets general fair use requirements, as follows:
    • The purpose and character of the use is informational in nature; the image is used to explain and enhance understanding of a unique event in Johnson's career that received significant media coverage and endures in the public memory with respect to Johnson in particular and Major League Baseball in general.
    • The nature of the work is fundamentally informational, rather than creative. It is a screenshot of a video transmission of a sporting event, whose primary purpose was to provide viewers with information about the events of the game itself.
    • A very small amount of the original work is used. The entire work is a videorecording of more than two hours in length; here, a low-resolution screenshot of a single frame of the game (approx. 1/30 of a second of footage) is excerpted.
    • This usage has no market impact on the economic viability of a videorecording of a spring training baseball game from 2001.
