Summary

Description
English: A Triceratops horridus skull at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. The skull is lying on its right side, and you are seeing the back. The frill would be in the open space between the two "arms" top and to the right. The huge ball in the skull is known as the "occipital condyle", and it connected the skull to the spine. It fit into a socket in the uppermost vertebrae, and all the vertebrae near this connection were reinforced with long V-shaped splinters of bone known as "vetebral ribs". This created what scientists call the "atlas/axis complex" -- a massively reinforced area that supported the heavy Triceratops head. This fossil was collected in Fergus County, Montana.
