When one reads of the exploits of Fitzhugh Lees early life, it is difficultto reconcile the brilliant dare-devil recklessness, the love of fighting for itsown with fate and misfortune, with the calm, resolute, far-sighted man uponwhose shoulders rests a tremendous responsibility. He is the grandson of Gen. Henry Lee, Light Horse Harry, of revo-lutionary fame. His father, Sidney Smith Lee, was an officer in the UnitedStates navy. Fitzhugh Lee was appointed to the military academy of West Point whenhe was sixteen. He was graduated at the head of his class and entered thecavalry service. 170 AMERICAS WAR FOR HUMAN IT?. Never was there a more dashing trooper. There was never a betterhorseman in the United States army, and never a man who was bettermounted. He was, like the trooper of romances, a soldier from the feather inhis hat to his clinking spurs, happiest when danger threatened, with a laughalways on his lips, adored by his men, respected and loved by his superiors.

GENERAL FITZHUGH LEE, THE IDEAL AMERICAN. 171 Lee had a hand-to-hand fight with a famous Comanche chief, a warriorfamed throughout all the tribes for his prowess. Lee at that time weighedabout one hundred and forty pounds, and his antagonist was at least thirtypounds heavier, but the former didnt hesitate a minute. He sprang towardthe chief as he drew his revolver. The Indian grasped Lees pistol hand and raised his scalping knife.Lee grasped the redskins wrist with his other hand.
