Summary

Description

Amanita islandica Melot

Image location: Mukhrino Field Station of the UNESCO Chair of Ugra State University, Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia

I went to collect fungi around the Mukhrino field station for a week and I was lucky to find several of these majestic ringless Amanitas. The photos don’t do them justice because they were really massive and big, with the stipe up to 2 cm in diameter and thick, fleshy pileus; the volva was very thick too, 2-3 mm or so, and so were the lamellae. The color of the pileus ranged from almost white with a hint of gray at center to almost uniformly gray. Other parts were white, and the volva was without rusty stains. The forest there is typical middle taiga (Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, Betula pendula/pubescens, Populus tremula, Abies sibirica and Pinus sylvestris).
