The powerhouse at right houses machinery which provides the hydraulic pressure needed to operate the miter gates (large pairs of gates which close the ends of the lock) and the filling and emptying culverts.
The sign on the wall reads "LP / 40.5 R". This informs downbound pilots that the level of the lower pool (the stretch of water below the dam) is 40.5 feet and rising. A similar sign on the downstream side of the building shows the level of the upper pool (above the dam).
