Summary

Description
English: The Buttermarket, Hereford The Buttermarket overlooks Hereford's High Town, it is described by Pevsner as '...a kind of free English Wren-Gibbs style...'. The façade was designed by John Clayton in 1861, and is indeed very reminiscent of a Wren Church. On the façade is a royal crest, two carved statues and a clock which was originally for the new Town Hall building. There was a competition to find the best clock design, however the winning design ended up above the entrance to the Buttermarket. The stone used for the building is oolitic limestone (Cotswold stone), made up of millions of tiny spherical grains (ooliths) laid down on the sea bed millions of years ago.
